WHAT GOD WANTS FROM US

By SOUGHTOUT EMEKA MATTHEW

 INTRODUCTION:

“And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul” Deuteronomy10:12

In every relationship, there are things each party requires the other to do in order to have a good relationship. In the same vein, God has things He would that we should do in order to maintain good relationship with Him.

There are four things I will be sharing with you in this article to help you have a sweet and good relationship with God. And they are:

FOUR THINGS GOD WANTS FROM US

  1. TO FEAR THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART AND WITH ALL THY SOUL

To fear the Lord is to reverence Him or have respect for God. It means to honor Him. Respect is crucial to every lasting relationship. Any relationship that lacks it is heading to the rock.

The Bible defined the fear of the Lord as hating evil and departing from it.

“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate”. Proverbs 8:13

“By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” Proverbs 16:6

All these are to be done with all your heart and soul. This is called whole-hearted reverential fear, honor and respect for God, His word or instructions.

  1. TO WALK IN ALL HIS WAYS WITH ALL THY HEART AND WITH ALL THY SOUL

The word ways is figuratively expressed as two roads. In every relationship, life leaves us with two roads to make choice of walk. These roads could be wrong or right.

God has His ways and likewise man. the ways of God differs from ours. in fact it is called HIGHER WAYS (See Isaiah 55:8-9  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts”.)

Gods ways are His thoughts for us. His thoughts are His plans. When it is said we should walk in the ways of the Lord, it means we should follow His thoughts and plans for our lives. His plans are His direction for our lives.

Beside that, ways also means how to. Things should not be done with carelessness. We must follow methods things are done to save ourselves from lots of mess. God doesn’t do things any how. He is methodical.  We have to follow His method of doing things to be in good relationship with Him that is why He enjoined us to walk in all and not some of His ways.

To word walk means to tread on. It means to follow. All these we have to do with all your heart and soul. This is what I call whole-hearted followership and compliance or observance to methods, thoughts and plans of God for our lives and how to live and do things.

  1. TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THY HEART AND WITH ALL THY SOUL

Relationship dies where there is no love. For our relationship with God to last, love is needed.

What does it mean to love the Lord. To love the Lord is to cherish Him. It means to set your affection on Him. It is to have a delight for God. It is to have a desire for God. To be deeply affected with passion for God. It means to be in league with God. This is because love unites and bring two parties into pact. It is also to bind up or join together with Him. It means to be fond of God. All these are to be done with all your heart and soul. This is called whole-hearted love.

  1. TO SERVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART AND WITH ALL THY SOUL

To serve the Lord means to worship Him. It means to give Him the service that is due to Him. It means to work for Him. It means to sacrifice for Him.

It means to minister unto Him. It means to wait on Him. It is to be His servant. It is to do His service. All these are to be done with all your heart and soul. This is called whole-hearted service.
