LIVING AS GOD WANTS
By SOUGHTOUT EMEKA MATTHEW
“We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will, with all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives. Then you will be able to live as the Lord wants and will always do what pleases him”. Colossians 1:9–10 TEV
God’s desire for us is to live as He wants. This is because; He didn’t create us to live the way we want or the way situation wants us to live or the way parents and friends wants us to live. We are God’s workmanship created to live the way He per-ordained that we should live.
“We are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus…that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us…that we should walk in them…”
Ephesians 2:10 AMP
WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE AS GOD WANTS
Living as God wants simply means to behave God’s way. In our conducts, we should live as God wants us to live. In our relationships, we are to live the way God wants us to live. In fact, living as God wants is simply doing what pleases God in our words, thoughts and actions. It is living according to the leading of the Spirit of God in your life.
TO LIVE AS GOD WANTS
The journey to living as God wants begins by:
- BEING BORN AGAIN:
To be born again means to be recreated in Christ Jesus. It means becoming a new creature created in Christ Jesus. It also means to be in Christ.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
- HAVING A RENEWED MIND:
When God created man, he lived as God wanted until sin came into him. Since the fall of man humanity never lived as God, our creator wants because of satanic influence over us.
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Ephesians 2:1-3
Until your mind is renewed, you cannot live as God wants us to live.
“Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God—what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.” Rom 12:2 GNB
We cannot change the way we thinks by ourselves. It is God who does the work of mind renewal. Until we allow God to change the way we thinks, we can never live as God wants. But we will always conform to the way the world wants us to live or the way human nature wants us to live.
It is also important to note that we are what we think.
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” Proverbs 23:7 KJV
“Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you. You will be able to know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.” Romans 12:2 ERV
HOW GOD RENEWS OUR MIND
Some of the ways God changes the way we thinks and get our lives changed and cleaned up to live the way He wants us to is through:
- HIS WORD:
When God’s moves through the reading and hearing of God’s word into your heart, it becomes difficult for you to live against how God wants us to live.
The Psalmist wrote,
“Thy spoken word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119: 11
2. OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S COMMAND:
“With what shall a young man cleanse his way? when he shall keep thy word.” Psalm 119:9
3. SEEKING OF GOD’S HELP IN PRAYERS:
“With my whole heart I have sought thee; O let me not err from thy commandments”. Psalm 119:10
4. FOLLOWING THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND ALLOWING HIS TO CONTROL YOUR LIFE:
“What I say is this: let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature”. Galatians 5:16 GNB
One of the things our human nature does is that it opposes what God wants. This is because; what God wants opposes what our human nature desires us to do and because of this, both are enemies to each other.
“For what our human nature wants is opposed to what the Spirit wants, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to what our human nature wants. These two are enemies, and this means that you cannot do what you want to do”. Galatians 5:17
Another thing human nature does is that it reveals itself in immoral, filthy and indecent actions, etc and if we allow human nature to control our lives, it makes us subjects of law. This is because; by living as it wants, we break the law; but if we follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and allows Him to control our lives; we will not be under the law nor break it; but we will be able to live as God wants.
“If the Spirit leads you, then you are not subject to the Law. What human nature does is quite plain. It shows itself in immoral, filthy, and indecent actions; in worship of idols and witchcraft. People become enemies and they fight; they become jealous, angry, and ambitious. They separate into parties and groups; they are envious, get drunk, have orgies, and do other things like these. I warn you now as I have before: those who do these things will not possess the Kingdom of God. But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have put to death their human nature with all its passions and desires. The Spirit has given us life; he must also control our lives.” Galatians 5:18-25
HOW GOD WANTS US TO LIVE
God wants us to live as He lives. He wants us to exhibit His characters. This is because; they are life that pleases Him. And what are these characters? To mention but few, they are: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, and HUMILITY and SELF-CONTROL.
“But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have put to death their human nature with all its passions and desires. The Spirit has given us life; he must also control our lives”. Galatians 5:22-25
God wants us to love Him and to love one another, even our enemies. He wants us to live a joyful life even in ugly situations. He wants us to be at peace with one another and also peace makers. He wants us to be patient with Him, with life and with others. This is because; when we are in a haste to get anything, we may go against the will of God.
God also wants us to be kind to one another, even to our enemies. When they are hungry and thirsty, we should give to them to eat and drink.
God wants us to be good. Jesus went about doing good (See Acts 10:38), we should go about doing good works for which we are created in Christ Jesus and for which God had pre-planned before the foundation of the world that we should live them.
God wants us to be faithful. In whatever He or other commit into our hands, we are to be faithful in it. Whether what is committed to us is little or big, faithfulness is required of us. This is because; God is faithful and faithfulness is His nature, and we should know that.
“Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations”. Deuteronomy 7:9.
We should be faithful to fulfill our promises. We should be faithful in our relationships. We should be faithful to our spouses and children, and lots more.
God also wants us to be humble. Jesus is an epitome of humility. He left His throne and personality as God, put on humanity via humility, became obedient, even to the death of the cross and God the father lifted Him and gave Him a name that is above all names.
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:5-11 KJV
Beside humility, God wants us to have self control. It is important to know that whosoever God’s Spirit cannot control cannot control oneself in all things human nature and all its passion and desires pressurizes him to do.
When God’s Spirit is not in your life to control you in order for you to control yourself in living as human nature and all its passion and desires dictates, you cannot be spiritual. And a person who is not spiritual, no matter how good he/she tried to do or to become, the bad things or person he/she do not want to be or do will surely be what he or she will end up doing or becoming.
“Yes, I know that nothing good lives in me–I mean nothing good lives in the part of me that is not spiritual. I want to do what is good, but I don’t do it. I don’t do the good that I want to do. I do the evil that I don’t want to do.” Romans 7:18:19 ERV
These God’s characters mentioned above cannot be possessed and exhibited until you are able to put the human nature and all its passion and desires in our lives to death, receive the life the Spirit of God gives and you must let Him control your life. And to put it to death and receive the Holy Spirit and the life He gives, you have to belong to Christ Jesus. And to belong to Christ Jesus, you have to believe and receive Him into your life.
“But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God. They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself.” John 1:12-13 ERV
“Life comes from the Father himself. So the Father has also allowed the Son to give life.” John 5:26
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14 KJV
Having come to this point, wouldn’t you like to live as God wants?
