INTRODUCTION:
God’s will and desire for mankind is to live together in unity. It is His will for families and even His church.

“And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” Matthew 19:5
“And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” John 10:16

The word UNITY speaks of oneness or togetherness. God wants us to be one and to do things together in order to achieve great results in our communities, families, teams and organizations.
Any nation, people, community, family or organization that is not one nor do things together will have their purposes frustrated and their goals unrealized (see Genesis 11:1-9):

“And the earth was of one tongue, and of the same speech. And when they removed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sennaar, and dwelt in it. And each one said to his neighbour: Come let us make brick, and bake them with fire. And they had brick instead of stones, and slime instead of mortar: And they said: Come, let us make a city and a tower, the top whereof may reach to heaven; and let us make our name famous before we be scattered abroad into all lands. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building. And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed. Come ye, therefore, let us go down, and there confound their tongue, that they may not understand one another’s speech. And so the Lord scattered them from that place into all lands, and they ceased to build the city. And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries.”

KEYS TO AVOIDING DIVISION IN YOUR ORGANISATION

1. THAT YE ALL SPEAK THE SAME THING.
When we share different visions in a course or goal being pursued by a team, the course or goal will definitely be unrealized.

In the story of the first pursuit of corporate goal mentioned in the Bible, we are made to understand that the people had one language, one speech and one vision they share. God even made a remark on that powerful key and that will make them unstoppable achievers.

“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” Genesis 11:1-6

The apostle Paul understood the power of communicating with one another on one vision, pleaded with the church of Corinth that they should maintained the communication of one vision among them. And that was because; it is the secret of avoiding division in any organization and succeeding in their pursuits.

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing… that there be no divisions among you; ….” 1Co_1:10

2. THAT YE BE PERFECTLY JOINED TOGETHER IN THE SAME MIND.
To have same mind is to be likeminded or to be perfectly joined in the same mind. And to arrive at that, we must have same love for one another and be of one accord.

“Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” Philippians 2:2

Lasting unity cannot be achieved if we are partially joined together in the same mind. Until we are perfectly joined together in the same mind, we cannot enjoy lasting unity in our families, nations and organizations.

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind …” 1Co_1:10

We should all strive to be perfectly integrated in the same mind or heart. If we say, this or that is what we want to achieve, everybody have to accept and work towards that same goal.

And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed.”

3. THAT YE BE PERFECTLY JOINED TOGETHER IN THE SAME JUDGMENT.
The word JUDGMENT in this context means PERCEPTION. Division is sure to set into any organization when the people involve sees things in different angles.

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together … in the same judgment.” 1Co_1:10

4. THAT THE MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME CARE ONE FOR ANOTHER.
When people do not get fair treatment in an organization, division looms. When there was no fair distribution of food stuffs among the church members, there was murmuring from Greek Christians against the Jewish Christians. This could have led to serious division and distractions in the church, if not for the intervention of the early apostles, see Acts 6:1-6.

It is written:

“That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.” 1Co_12:25

Partiality leads to division wherever people gather together to chat on one course. Everybody should be treated same or equally. Let there be no sacred cow. This is because:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal_3:28

5. THAT WE SHOULD ALLOW GOD’S PEACE CONTROL OUR HEARTS.
Our hearts are important and should be touched by God if unity must be achieved among team members or Christians in order to achieve corporate goal(s).

Troubled hearts cannot maintain corporate unity rather peaceful and tranquil hearts will even in the state of provocation.

Our hearts is the centre of our lives. The condition of our hearts determines who we are and how we behave. We cannot be better persons when our hearts is not in better condition. To be better persons, we must have our hearts changed for better. And there is no one who can do that better except God. So, we should allow God to work on our hearts so to make us better people.

The apostle Paul enjoined:

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Col_3:15

6. THAT WE SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT WE CALLED INTO UNITY.
We are called in one body, which is the CHURCH.

The church is like a human body. She has many members as the body has many parts with their distinct functions. As the body cannot function perfectly without other parts, as cars cannot function without other components, the church cannot function according to God’s will and plan.

Unity is God’s purpose for effective functioning of the church and other creatures of God. Even inventors knew that too and that’s why they integrate every component of their inventions to function distinctively and in cooperation with other components to fulfill the purpose of the inventor for certain invention.

“… ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Col_3:15

7. THAT WE HAVE ONE SPIRIT.
One the things we should strive to do in order to keep division away from our organizations, teams, nations, etc is to endeavour to keep the unity of the spirit, (see Ephesians 4:3, “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”.) This is because: “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” 1Co 12:13

8. THAT WE SEE EACH OTHER AS IMPORTANT.
Division is bound to set into any organization when members of an organization or members of a team sees each other as more important than the others.

The Bible confirmed:

“For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.” 1Co 12:14-23 KJV

9. THAT WE MOVE FROM CARNALITY TO SPIRITUALITY.
It takes envy to arrive at jealousy. It takes jealousy to arrive at strife and strife to division. And all these are products of carnality.

“for you are still fleshly. For insofar as there is jealousy, strife, and factions among you, aren’t you fleshly, and don’t you walk in the ways of men? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you fleshly?” 1Co 3:3-4 WEB

To bring a lasting cure to division, we have to move from carnality to spirituality. The fruits of the Spirit started with LOVE, (see Galatians 5:22). Where there is love, there will be no envy, jealousy, strife and division.

10. THAT OUR PURPOSES SHOULD BE GOD-BASED.
Any purpose that is not God-based will be divinely interrupted and division is what it takes to frustrate such purpose.

The Bible confirmed this fact:

And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries.” Genesis 11:1-9
