CLASSES OF FOLKS THAT FOLLOWS A LEADER
SOUGHTOUT EMEKA MATTHEW
There is no leadership without followership. This is because what makes a leader is not just having leadership skills; but when he turns back and sees people following him. That’s what make him leader!
A leader without followers is a lone-ranger; but anyone who is with followers is a leader.
The success of a leader sometimes is dependent on the people in his team who he is leading. The quality of your followership determines the quality of your leadership.
In this article, we will be examining 10 classes of followers following leaders in various organizations:
- PEOPLE THAT LOVE TO FOLLOW YOU BUT GIVES EXCUSES WHY THEY WON’T FOLLOW:
This class of followers has themselves, their families and affairs as first in their priority list. If you have them in your fold, they can’t concentrate in the work they are doing nor follow fully in what the group is doing.
Sometimes, you cannot find them when you need them and they justify their unavailability and inefficiencies with excuses. They never know what they have as an excuse isn’t as important as their followership.
Matthew 8:19-22 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air [have] nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay [his] head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
- PEOPLE THAT FOLLOWS YOU BUT LOOKS BACK WHILE FOLLOWING A LEADER:
This class of followers is carried away by looking behind and looses focus on things before them. They are distracted by their past experience and dealings perhaps with last places they worked, persons they worked for, etc and lost focus on their future place they work or the leaders working with.
There is way you cannot hit the rock by walking or running looking back. Jesus said such people are not fit for the kingdom (working with the leader of the kingdom).
Luke 9:61-62 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
- PEOPLE THAT FOLLOWS A LEADER BUT GET OFFENDED BY MISUNDERSTANDING THE LEADER, BECAUSE HE NEVER DO THINGS THEIR WAY:
Followership is about doing things in the way(s) the leader wants you to. It’s about following in the steps of a leader.
In the case of this class of followers here, they gets offended by misunderstanding their leaders; because they want their leaders to do things in the way(s) they want them to.
This class of followers thinks they know better than their leader. They correct their leaders and tell people around how incompetent their leaders are and how competent they are.
This class of followers never sees anything done by the leader as good or right. They want him or her dance to their tune and they can back out from following their leaders so easily.
John 6: 47-64 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hatheternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heardthis, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
- PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWS A LEADER FOR WHAT THEY WANT TO GET FROM THE LEADER:
This class of followers follows with the aim of what they will get from the leader and there is every tendency they will leave if they couldn’t get what they want to get from the leadership.
John 6:24-26 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
- PEOPLE THAT FOLLOWS A LEADER AS FAULT FINDERS AND CRITICIZERS:
This class of followers is critics. They murmur and complain a lot in an organization. They criticize the leadership so much. The key factor to their fault-finding and criticism is familiarity with leadership.
John 6: 41-42 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
- PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWS A LEADER BUT DON’T BELIEVE IN THE LEADER AND ALSO BETRAYS HIM:
This class of followers follows a leader but never believe in him and in his leadership.
One characteristics of this class of followers is that they behaves friendly to their leaders; but betrays them at their back because of meeting personal aggrandizements.
John 6:64, 70-71 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.
- PEOPLE THAT FOLLOWS A LEADER BUT DON’T BELIEVE IN THE LEADER BECAUSE THEY WANT SOMETHING FROM HIM AS A PROOF HE IS A LEADER:
This class of followers is never satisfied with the leadership of their leaders. They never believe their leaders.
They challenges leadership and often tempt and test them to see if they are true, competent or not. Their tests and temptations are just to find to find fault from leadership so that they can blow it up to the public.
John 6:28-30 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
- PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWS A LEADER FOR THE IMPACT THEIR LEADERSHIP HAS MADE IN THEIR LIVES:
This class of followers follows their leaders because of the impact the leadership has made in their lives. They never stop believing and following their leaders.
They can’t follow or believe in their leaders if no impact is made in their lives.
Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
- PEOPLE WHO FOLLOWS A LEADER BUT NEVER RESPECT THE LEADER BECAUSE OF FAMILIARITY:
This class of followers is so familiar with their leaders and capitalizes on that familiarity and become disloyal and disrespectful to leadership.
John 6:42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
- PEOPLE THAT FOLLOWS A LEADER, BECAUSE GOD SENT TO FOLLOW THE LEADER:
This class of followers follows because they are God-sent to their leaders. They understand the worth of their leaders and the messages or the visions they carry or shares.
They also know the real who their leaders are and believe in them. They are ever ready to sacrifice anything to follow their leaders.
John 6:65-69 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
Having seen kinds of followers that follow leaders, which kind of follower do you think you are?
