BENEFITS OF UNITY

BENEFITS OF UNITY

By SOUGHTOUT EMEKA MATTHEW

INTRODUCTION:

Unity is defined as the state of being one. It is the state of oneness. It is a whole or totality as combining all its parts into one. It is the state or fact of being united or combined into one, as of the parts of a whole; unification. It is the absence of diversity; unvaried or uniform character. It is being oneness of mind, feeling, etc. It is also a relation of all the parts or elements of a work constituting a harmonious whole and producing a single general effect. It is synonymous to the word concord, harmony, or agreement. It is also a quantity regarded as one.

WHAT UNITY BRINGS

The benefits of unity cannot be over emphasized. To mention but few, the scripture revealed that UNITY BRINGS:

1.  REWARDING

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour…”

2.  ENCOURAGEMENT

“…For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up…”

3.MOTIVATION

“…For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up…”

4. SYNERGY

“…Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? …”

5. HIGH PRODUCTIVITY

“…Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? …”

6. FORMIDABILITY

“…And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

7. BLESSINGS

“See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, that ran down on the beard, even Aaron’s beard; that came down on the edge of his robes; like the dew of Hermon, that comes down on the hills of Zion: for there Yahweh gives the blessing, even life forever more.” Psalm 133:1-3 WEB

8. LONGEVITY

9. GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT

“And the earth was of one tongue, and of the same speech. And when they removed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sennaar, and dwelt in it. And each one said to his neighbour: Come let us make brick, and bake them with fire. And they had brick instead of stones, and slime instead of mortar: And they said: Come, let us make a city and a tower, the top whereof may reach to heaven; and let us make our name famous before we be scattered abroad into all lands. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building. And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed.” Genesis 11:1-9

Greater the unity grow, greater the accomplishment.

“And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.” Lev_26:8

10. GOD’S PRESENCE

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in

the middle of them.” Mat 18:20 WEB

11. ANSWERS TO PRAYER

“Again, assuredly I tell you, that if two of you will agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.” Mat 18:19 WEB

Today, in our nations, among many people, communities, families, political parties, teams or organizations, etc; who are one and together, we find division or fractionalization among them which led to the scattering of such entities and their purposes. This division has led to war, quarreling and fighting, segregation, fractionalization or denominationalism, crisis, and lots more.

In situations like these, what should be done to forestall unity are always the questions that people who are unity-minded always ask. Humans have created initiatives like peace talk, conflict resolution, etc to remedial corporate division or disunity, mostly to no avail.

Division or disunity is inevitable where two or more different people gather together for the pursuit of a purpose or to live together as one. Even the church is not exceptional in this issue, see 1 Corinthians 3:10-17:

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. “

In the church, division also sets in; but God provided us with the remedy. Such provision is because; He does not want division among His people.

Jesus, when He had done with His earthly missions on the earth even prayed that His disciples or the church should be one, even as He is one with the father. Unity in diversity is a possible achievement with the Church even as He and the Father are one (see John 17: 11, 21-22):

“And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one”

Paul promoted unity in diversity in the church in these statements:

“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Rom_12:4-5

“For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.” 1Co_10:17

“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. But now are they many members, yet but one body.” 1Co_12:12-13, 20

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Col_3:15
